Tanginika was born in the state of Florida and when she was an infant was brought to live with her paternal grandparents in Puerto Rico.  Her father took her to Puerto Rico after abducting her from her 15-year-old mother. Her grandparents brought her back to Florida when she was two years old and her father legally married another woman.  While in the care of her stepmother she was subjected to inhumane physical abuse and torture.  She suffered life-threatening injuries and multiple wounds, including a fractured skull and various broken bones.  Her father eventually returned her to Puerto Rico where she was raised by her paternal grandparents. She did not meet her biological mother until she was an adult and her abuser was never prosecuted.

Early in life, Tanginika realized the redeeming power of education as a means to control one’s life and destiny. She fervently believes that education is a valuable and essential tool to be acquired by all Latinas and all women. Her life gives vivid testimony to how an extensive education can help overcome adversity and make it possible to achieve success.

Currently, Tanginika lives in North Texas, and is involved in various local, state, national, and international Hispanic organizations.  All of them focus on promoting the Hispanic culture, leadership, and empowering women. They include: Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas, Fort Worth Chapter, for which she is former  Chair of Education; Las Comadres para las Américas, a global Latina organization; Asociación de Líderes Hispanos, headquartered in the Embassy of Spain in Washington D.C. and for which she is the Vice President; and Asociación Boricua en Dallas, which promotes the Puerto Rican culture. A former girl scout, she has been an advisor to the Girls Scouts of Tejas Council in the development of leadership programs and community involvement for the Hispanic population in Dallas, Texas.
